Orpheus Descending

Orpheus Descending presents a series of images of New York City at night from the point of view of an anonymous wanderer. Like Orpheus who descended into the underworld to find his Eurydice, it recounts an almost universal search for lost love in the darkness. In the images and text, the outside world becomes a mirror for an interior reality. Expressionist in colour and form, people lose their identity, their faces blurred or transformed by the energy within them. Businessmen and pedestrians become ghosts or shadows floating through the frame. Ultimately, the book is an elegiac story of coming to terms with the past after the rain has fallen, when even the damp sidewalks take on the saturated colours of the night, the grain of the film mixing with the rain until one cannot be separated from the other.
Orpheus Descending ist eine fotografische Reise durch die nächtlichen Straßen New Yorks, angesiedelt zwischen Traum und Wirklichkeit.
